I became aware, this morning, of the recently proposed “Moving Ontarians More Safely Act 2021, and feel the need to offer these comments.

I am opposed to any “vehicle based infractions” as they do not target the offender, but lazily apply punishment to “someone”. It is contrary to natural justice. This type of offence is offered in the case of a vehicle passing a street car.

The increase in stunt-driving penalties, in fact all stunt-driving penalties, seem to be driven by crusading authoritarians. It makes no distinction between cases that add significant risk to non-participants and those cases that do not add such risk - even though reducing risk to others is the stated intention. We should not be dictating personal behavior where it does not affect others. We should also not be including parking lots under highway legislation - there are criminal avenues for that.

The allowance and increase in speed cameras/red-light cameras is another “vehicle based infraction” that should not be allowed, they seem driven by a lazy attempt to say that someone, regardless of their culpability, must be punished.

I am in favour of reasonable efforts to ensure roadside worker safety such as the proposed automatic flagger assistance devices.
