I am writing with regard to the Ontario government’s proposal to repeal provisions in the Electricity Act and the Ontario Energy Board Act that promote and prioritize renewable energy.

I oppose this proposal in the strongest possible terms. The Province's duty under the Charter is to protect Ontarians' right to life, liberty, and the security of the person. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and many other organizations, have shown that burning fossil fuels to create power is a direct threat to these rights. Fossil-fuel based power leads to the breakdown of the global climate, threatening our futures with natural disasters, a loss of food security, increased disease load, ever-worsening migration pressures, conflicts, and more. In "Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector", researchers with the International Energy Agency (IEA) write that “Renewable energy technologies like solar and wind are the key to reducing emissions in the electricity sector, which is today the single largest source of CO2 emissions.” Indeed, these points are already before the courts, in Mathur v. Ontario. To eliminate renewable energy requirements now is exceptionally foolish.
