Telling these companies to reduce emissions by a certain date or else face fines per release is literally the same non-solution that's been used by the gov to appeal to greener voters for years while actually doing nothing. You think billion dollar industry cares about $100 000? That's nothing to them. They have no real consequences so why would they actually change. How pathetic is this country's love of dirty industry that they can't even bring themselves to even add a few more zeros? A hundred grand (unlikely even that) for destroying the environment? For potentially irreparable damage? Does the government of Canada care nothing about this planet that we all must share?
I say shut the industry down, all of it. Piece by piece this all needs to be dismantled and replaced by new, sustainable, clean, tech. No more pandering to oil and gas; they need to go. NOW. No more slaps on the wrist. Shut them down for violations, fines in the millions... for crying out loud, maybe just care!?
