The developers are moving into modest neighbourhoods, buying affordable houses, tearing them down and putting up monster homes. The worst is when a modest bungalow with a decent sized lot is torn down, the lot is split and two monster homes are built on two narrow lots. There is no protection for these neighbourhoods. If a town turns down the developer’s application, the developer simply appeals to the Ontario Land Tribunal and the development is granted. These older, modest bungalows are needed for those with physical disabilities, senior citizens and single women. They are excellent started homes for young couples. The OLT is stacked with pro-developer political appointees.
So the government is exacerbating the problem.
