The assertion, that the total affected land to be taken away from what is now greenbelt for residential development will in fact add to the acreage of the buffer zone by swapping in some high rocky land, does not hold up to scrutiny. The 'quid pro quo' lands are unsuitable for development, thus easy to bargain away. If that high land does in fact have importance to the water shed, it too should be protected; not used as a smoke screen for grabbing land already designated as of environmental importance. The end game- rebranding environmentally sensitive areas so they can be handed over to developers for their financial advantage- is callous and blatant politics of the worst kind.

Climate change impacts are a certainty. Naturalists (such as why local hero Bob Bowles ) have written tirelessly of the need to protect wetlands, woodlands, farmlands and wildlife habitat for the good of everyone. If Toronto needs to expand to accommodate population growth it should be looking at in-filling- going up and not out. Creative planners are a resource Toronto seems to have in abundance. They have already shown willingness and ability to create ingenious urban solutions that take into account the big picture. Give them the funding to go to work so everyone - including the planet-can benefit!
