Since I was a child, I admired the protection of the Greenbelt. I was prideful in our province's belief in sustainability, I naively believed that we would have this belief forever and that the Greenbelt would remain a long-lasting protected piece of land.
I am deeply ashamed in the provincial government and their willingness to sacrifice Ontario's future and our beautiful nature for short-term profit of pro-sprawl land developers. With imminent threats of climate change, this is an extremely rash and irrational act. There are a plethora of actions that we can take towards improving the availability and affordability of housing that the government has seemingly refused to take. Rather than tearing apart the Greenbelt, we should be moving towards creating more mixed-use housing and improved transportation options that make our existing cities more livable and affordable.
