Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022 is a direct and thorough weakening of environmental protection, ironically just as world leaders wrap up discussions in Egypt on addressing the climate emergency. It is a step backwards in land use planning and opens the floodgates to unchecked development in Ontario’s natural spaces and farmlands. On top of all this, municipal governments will not have a chance to take a position on a bill that will affect them tremendously as newly elected municipal governments have not been sworn in or met yet.
Ontario needs more affordable housing — stripping environmental protections, the power of conservation authorities, the ability of municipalities to plan development, and shutting the public out of local decisions on development and land use? Not the way we get there.
The public consultation period on this bill ends Nov. 24th. Submit a comment: https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-6196. Make your voice heard.
