The Greenbelt is intended to protect gathering of drinkable water for down line communities (like mine), to provide movement routes for wildlife, and to protect arable land so that we can produce FOOD, you know, the stuff that we eat?? When we trade arable land for more built up areas, we increase demand for food, while reducing our ability to grow it.
Also, can we get a grip of how big a house a family really needs? The enormous, and enormously-priced homes that are typically built, are land hungry, energy hungry, and way out of line with our need to reduce our human footprint.
And, when we build housing far from the workplaces of the occupants, we create even more traffic and travel between home and workplace. That leads to more consumption of fuels and emissions into the atmosphere. This cycle of behaviour needs review.
WHAT WE NEED is modest housing, near to the places where people will work.
Build smaller housing that people can afford, in a location that serves their daily needs.
