Back in 2018, Doug Ford stated: "The people have spoken — we won't touch the Greenbelt. Very simple. That's it, the people have spoken. I'm going to listen to them. They don't want me to touch the Greenbelt, we won't touch the Greenbelt." The Government has clearly broken this promise. Moreover, the proposed amendments to the Greenbelt plan will not only destroy fragile wetlands and irreplaceable agricultural land, but it will promote more suburban sprawl. We certainly need more (affordable) housing, but this is not the way to do it. There is already land available. And we also need to think about higher-density housing and more public transport. Suburban sprawl only leads to the need for more highways -- again leading to the destruction of natural habitats and critical agricultural land. We cannot go on like this. The proposed amendments to the Greenbelt plan need to be stopped -- and new and more forward-thinking plans for additional housing need to be developed.
