The Duffins Creek watershed includes Greenwood Conservation Area. This is a park frequented by three generations of my family. We lived in Toronto, and Greenwood was our getaway. There were picnics, fishing and wading. Family reunions and I went to day camp on Easter break as well. Heck, my high school boyfriend did maintenance there as a summer job.
And Greenwood is part of the watershed that has the Duffins Creek wetlands to the south which are supposed to be protected. Instead, they are ruined by farming BUT they can be restored. Please be aware the wetlands can be recovered.
But now a chunk of the Oak Ridges Morraine to the north of Greenwood is going to be developed. This will be a huge negative impact to Greenwood. The watershed is interconnected. We need to maintain its integrity.
I was born in 1954, the year of Hurricane Hazel. Since I was a child, I was told about the devastation of Hazel AND I was told the “government” had passed laws to protect us and banned building on “flood plains”. My whole life, I have always looked at those wide green expanses beside our many rivers and creeks as a testament to the learned wisdom of government doing the right thing for its citizens.
There are other lands in Toronto and other municipalities that are not on the Greenbelt, and within existing municipal boundaries. Use these to create housing.
