This proposal does not provide a route for building more housing, not does it ensure that our most sensitive lands will remain protected. The land swaps fail to recognize the complicated connections that support the ecosystems currently protected in the Greenbelt.
In the era of climate change, cutting conservation authorities out of the development process hinders climate progress and could spell disaster for residents living in flood zones. Development of conservation lands — particularly wetlands — disrupts the natural flood protection services they provide. It also puts residents living on them in the direct path of future flooding.
I am disappointed that the current government's promises to protect and maintain the Greenbelt have been tossed aside and instead it has introduced this proposal that will increase sprawl and ill-advised development on ecologically sensitive lands.
