We are in the midst of an apocalyptic destruction of nature, never before encountered in the history of humanity. I am a mother and grandmother, and I despair about the world my daughter and granddaughter are going to have to live in. We're losing wildlife, our brothers and sisters on this planet, at an alarming rate, mainly related to habitat loss. According to the World Wildlife Fund, we lost a heartbreaking *68%* of all animals in the world from 1970 to 2016 (see first link below).
The greenbelt also acts as a carbon sink, which helps mitigate climate change, another existential threat to humanity. Bill 23 is expected to cause flooding and erosion or destroy wetlands and other conservation lands (see second link below).
Many believe Bill 23 is a gift for developers seeking fewer restrictions to build small luxury homes downtown, or large homes that sprawl beyond urban boundaries. It will result in a housing crisis, as it helps large corporate landlords seeking to push out low-income tenants and strips the power and resources cities have in building and protecting affordable housing. Developers profiting from the destruction of ecologically sensitive, protected land around Toronto are PC contributors, a clear conflict of interest (see third and last link below).
I strongly urge you to repeal Bill 23.
Respectfully yours.
