The greenbelt was created for several specific purposes and was enacted in consultation with experts and the public. Seeking to alter the well researched and forward thinking investment in the future that is the greenbelt is short sighted at best, and downright ignorant greed at its worst. The opening up for development of lands bought by speculators years ago is pandering to a select few with deep pockets, or in a single word: corruption.
I disagree strongly with the Ford government's reversal of policy as regards the protection of the entirety of the greenbelt. Ontario should continue to enjoy clean water, the food security of fertile farmlands, and beautiful wildlands for the enjoyment of people and survival of species other than humans.
As for the housing crisis, this is a problem most acutely felt in Toronto, my home city. Building housing way out in the greenbelt does not solve Toronto's housing crisis, and will only add to pressures on highway systems that cannot handle the current volume of commuters. Affordable housing policies and densification in the GTA are the answer, not this far flung bedroom community.
