It’s unfortunate that I’m just finding out that there is a public consultation period still open for this proposal. I would like to have the opportunity to give a more fulsome response.
However, in the limited time remaining, I’ll comment that as a member of a seventh generation farm family, this move is heartbreaking. My family’s land is not within the current boundaries of the Greenbelt, and it’s unclear if it’s being added. The effects of the recent rampant development are clear though. It’s been devastating to the cohesion of our farming communities and their agricultural orientation. These sweeping changes threaten our way of life, not to mention the food supply of millions of Ontarians and environmentally sensitive lands. Destroying this land is irrevocable, and these sweeping changes makes my future uncertain, not to mention that of the next generation. What will they have to look forward to? Box stores, fast food joints and vape stores.
The province is not directly engaging with rural people and farmers. We have put our blood, sweat, and tears into the land for generations, and now we are being treated like yesterday’s garbage. Farmers Feed Cities.
This is an emotional topic. It is complex and requires more thoughtful consideration. I hope the province will listen to its people and reconsider. Thank you.
