With all due respect, my family and I stand with the City of Ottawa (as well as, with leading environmental, community and social justice organizations from across Ottawa) in REJECTING Bill 23 because Bill 23 raises a number of environmental concerns, including jeopardizing the protection of habitats, ecosystems, wetlands, urban parklands, and other greenspaces. It also effectively scraps Ottawa’s green building standard, in an incredible lack of foresight, missing climate targets while ultimately costing homeowners and renters. Why would the Conservative Dough Ford Administration propose a Bill with significant changes to how wetlands are evaluated and protected, risking the designation and therefore protection of many of our greenspaces? I do not know. Do you know how this Bill would remove the power of Conservation Authorities to regulate or prohibit the destruction of woodlands, wetlands, river or stream valleys, within their jurisdiction, in almost every case? It does this through Section 7 of the Bill, which would amend s. 28 of the Conservation Authorities Act to exempt any project that has received land use planning approval under the Planning Act from Conservation Authority regulations regulating water-taking, interference with rivers, creeks, streams, watercourses, and wetlands, or controlling flooding, erosion, conservation of land, or impact on species at risk. . . After having lived through the May 2022 Canadian Derecho, I fail to see any logic behind legislation that would remove much needed protection of our wetlands, farmland and natural areas in Ontario. Please say NO to Government by Oligarchy. Ontario families and Mother Earth need YOU on our side! Thank YOU for taking the time to read my comment.
