Waterloo depends on ground water for water supply. By paving more farmland, we'll be putting up more barrier for rain and surface water to reach underground aquifers. At the same time we have been allowing our heritage water source to be depleted by unregulated farming and industrial practices. We must reverse course now and conserve and recharge. Crusting the land will be dead wrong.
There are still lots of real estate within the town that is sitting idle. The closed King Street post office, for instance, had been vacant for years and has only recently been torn down. Lots of buildings in the city core are running down and empty. The city should see to it that these gems be put to use before expanding the city limit.
We should put a halt to property speculation and improve the utility of what we have. Dentrify the city. Don't promote urban sprawl.
