I call on the provincial government to approve Waterloo Region Official Plan Amendment 6.
I closely followed the development of Waterloo Region's process to update its Regional Official Plan, participating directly in several of the steps through the public engagement process. This plan is the result of a robust and highly democratic regional planning process. That process should be respected by higher orders of government.
The updated Regional Official Plan is a roadmap for a sustainable future in our region, providing for residential and economic growth while protecting the agricultural resources and ecological assets that are vital for food security and well being.
During Waterloo's public consultation and decision-making process, there was plenty of pressure from developers wanting to open more land for suburban sprawl. They were drowned out at every turn by ordinary citizens who know the value of thoughtful planning. I urge the provincial government to not be swayed by that same developer lobby that I know is pushing hard for some regional plans to be rejected. Now is the time to stand up for democracy, for ordinary citizens, and for the principle that decisions are best when made closest to where they matter.
Please approve Waterloo's new Official Regional Plan so that we can keep working to make our Region an example of sustainable 21st century urbanization.
Thank you for considering my views on this important matter.
