Energy storage is an important component identified in the P2D report. However, the IESO does not seem to have considered using salt caverns to store hydrogen produced in Ontario using low-carbon off-peak power. When coupled with fuel cells or combustion units designed to burn hydrogen you have a process that is functionally a battery.
This hydrogen-based ‘battery’ can store energy for use over time periods ranging from a few hours, or days, and even seasons. Table 1 in the attachment identifies the compelling advantages a hydrogen-based battery offers over a conventional battery.
This is a 21st-century energy storage system designed, built, and located in Ontario. This aligns with Ontario's Hydrogen Strategy.
