Cancelling the Ontario Cap and Trade program would be financially, socially and environmentally irresponsible. In light of the most recent UN report on climate change the situation for the planet is dire. Globally we must slash greenhouse gas emissions by 45% within 12 years, and limit global warming to 1.5°C.
There must be support and incentives for business, industry, property owners and consumers to choose sustainable options for reducing GHGs. The Cap and Trade program was designed to do this.
In 2016, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario set ambitious yet achievable emissions reduction targets aligned with the actions of other provinces and states and in line with global objectives. Ontario is the country’s second most carbon polluting province, after Alberta.
Premier Ford, I call on your government to show the leadership demanded by the climate crisis and publicly commit to achieving Ontario’s existing legislated greenhouse emission reduction goals by 37.5% from 1990 levels by 2030, and to table a “detailed, scientifically sound plan” to meet these goals without delay.
