The recent IPCC report and numerous other sources of research show how urgent climate change is. Vulnerable countries are already experiencing droughts, heat waves, extreme weather, and conditions that exacerbate existing inequalities. It is essential that Ontario and Canada lead the way in promoting climate mitigation and carbon emissions reduction. This is not a partisan issue.
As a new parent to a young child through adoption, a path chosen largely for environmental reasons, I am terrified at the thought of this heavy load of social and environmental insecurity being added to her already heavy baggage. A fair and well-planned and rapid transition to a low carbon economy is essential. I urge you to ensure that there is a high and rising price on carbon in Ontario, whether through maintaining/modifying the current cap and trade system, or through replacing it with a revenue neutral or near neutral carbon fee and dividend system.
