I am a resident of Adelaide Metcalfe township. I live approximately 3 KM north of the proposed site for the bio-solids plant. I have major concerns that this project should require a thorough Environmental assessment. The present standards for bio-solid waste to be used as proposed are outdated and haven't been up-dated in over 20 years. The use of bio-solid waste as fertilizer in many parts of Europe is no longer allowed, as many chemical and pharmaceutical residues are not removed in the process, and then these contaminants are spread on agricultural properties with the residues being absorbed into the plants and thus into the commodity being grown. Another major concern I have is that the site is located within 1-1/2 Kms of the Sydenham River. The ditches around this property drain directly into the Sydenham River on the north side, and drain into a tributary creek on the west and the south sides. Without a proper, thorough Environmental assessment and review, as well as appropriate site containment, any extreme rain event, of which this area has had many in the last 5 years, will cause contamination to the waterway. Additionally all the properties in the area are on wells. If these wells are contaminated due to this enterprise is the Government guaranteeing area residents of access to treated water via a pipeline from a reliable water source? Another concern is the odour these sites emit. While I live in farm country and expect the odour from spreading of manure, it is only an occasional occurrence. With this site the odour will be a constant nuisance.Please ensure the safety of all the residents and rate-payers in this locale by at least ensuring proper up to date environmental standard are used, doing a thorough review, and hopefully by cancelling this application.
