I believe the previous system worked better. The one thing I do agree with the new system is the removal of automatic calf tags for all persons. They will become future adult moose which can reproduce.
The previous system should be brought back but with the few known issues being fixed.
One big issue we are not addressing is the decline in moose numbers. I think most hunters would agree, restore the moose population before issuing more tags.
I would also like to see less cow tags being issued. A bull can impregnate multiple females (leading to increase calf numbers, leading to increase moose numbers, etc.), but a female cannot be impregnated by multiple bulls.
If the government had a solid plan to increase the moose population over the coming years (by limiting the number of tags issued) and thereafter having a solid moose management plan that ensures sustainability, I'm sure most hunters would be happy to not hunt moose for a few years.
Issuing more tags might make people happier in the short term, but we are further dwindling the moose population towards a breaking point.
