Please keep the bike lanes and let the City of Toronto work out what needs to be done locally. Anything that separates out motor vehicles and cyclists is a good thing! As a driver I hate having to cope with cyclists in my path. Particularly after dark.
Also, as a driver I have noticed a marked increase in crosstown traffic following the restrictions on the Gardiner Expressway, not since the introduction of bike lanes.
