I am commenting on the proposal for a new Environmental Compliance Approval (sewage) for Infrastructure Ontario. This application is for the approval of interim combined sewer overflows to be constructed at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard West, in the City of Toronto. The storm water will discharge into Lake Ontario.
I am opposed to the proposal which goes against decades of work by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewers across the city to prevent the discharge of raw sewage into Lake Ontario. This proposal also flouts international agreements to protect water quality and habitat in the Great Lakes. This effluent will cause untold damage to the health of Lake Ontario, threatens the Lake fishery, and human health in terms of water quality at beaches, fishing and the quality of the lake as an attraction for Canadian and international visitors. The province has also not held any consultations about this work with the general public.
This proposal to benefit the Therme MegaSpa developers and investors, goes against the public interest and threatens the stability of the lake ecosystem in a time of severe biodiversity loss. There is no need to by-pass the City of Toronto plans to deal with this issue properly and protect the lake and peoples' health. I ask you to deny this permit.
