Hi, there is a reason behind the Environmental Bill of Rights. It's to protect the environment. For us, for future generations, for species who rely on us as custodians of their home and for the health of the planet.
The Ontario Government is repeatedly trying to circumvent rules and regulations and do whatever they please. Even though the people whose voice they're supposed to represent, are 100% against it. The government can't be do as I say, not as I do. That's not the way it works. If there's disregard for the environment at the top, it sets a dangerous precedent for anyone -- public or private -- to similarly ignore rules and do whatever they want, when they want.
The government is planning to use Ontario taxes to needlessly destroy what was a thriving ecosystem and spend billions of our money on a project that ignores what Ontarians want. They can't completely eliminate public participation while even using one dollar of public taxes. We have a right to know what our money is being spent on and why. We have a right to want to protect our environment and find environmentally friendly solutions.
To be clear, I am against shielding a private, foreignly-owned mega spa from environmental protection and public input. This is obviously wrong and whomever allows this to happen must be held accountable. From increased traffic in a zone that is already at its limit to support those of us who live in the area. To proposing to dump sewage inside the break wall in the west channel. I swim there. The park I used to run through daily has been cut off and destroyed. Now they want to stop me from being able to swim safely. I love this area and I'm thoroughly against this misuse of public funds and continual refusal to listen to the public and find safe ways to reinvigorate a public space that should be accessible to all.
The Government of Ontario must respect environmental protections and remove Schedule 8 of the new Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025. We are watching and demanding the right outcome.
We need our government to hear us when spending our taxes. When spending taxes they need to inform us in detail why and how they're spending what's essentially the province's money to go to what taxpayers truly need. We want our taxes to go to public interest and the interest of the environment. Not to benefit the private sector initiatives, instead.
This mega spa is costing us too much in too many ways and it needs to stop. Every rule for new development must be followed with transparency. Do the right thing and remove Schedule 8. Allowing it to pass will set a precedent that we as taxpayers, who are funding a project against our will, are vehemently against. I want my neighbourhood park back. My daily routine of locking my bike at Ontario Place and running along the water has been snatched away. I now have to bike 30 minutes west to Sunnyside to now park my bike and run. As a taxpayer who lives in the community, this is unacceptable.
We're watching. Our government, like us, needs to be accountable and transparent.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to heartfelt words. I'm still holding onto hope that public opinion matters and that we have a government who listens instead of bulldozing its way into doing whatever they want, however they want. This HAS TO STOP. All of us want to move forward, but we NEED to find ways to do so without destroying habitats and ignoring rules made for us and future generations.
