I call for this proposal to be withdrawn. An EA of the Eagle's Nest Mine must proceed. If passed, Bill 5 would:
* Terminate the environmental assessment for Eagle’s Nest mine - a proposed mining project in Treaty 9 lands, part of the proposed Ring of Fire.
Removing the EA for this project - designed to help government decision makers, Indigenous authorities & rights holders, & members of the public understand the environmental & socioeconomic outcomes of proposed activities before moving ahead - jeopardizes the lands & waters in the James Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario. The ecological integrity of this region is essential to protect against the worsening effects of Climate Change through absorption and holding of carbon by the vast and sensitive wetlands.
First Nations sovereignty must be recognized and the 49 First Nations across the region must give their informed consent, including to refuse projects that harm their territories. Their way of life, which the treaties promise to protect, depends on the healthy lands and waters.
The Hudson't Bay lowlands are a vital hub for the preservation of biodiversity. Millions of migratory birds depend on the area, not to mention land and sea mammals, and other wildlife and plant life. The economy does not trump the conservation of nature, which all living things depend on.
