I am writing to express strong opposition to the proposed Special Economic Zones Act, 2025, which would allow the Ontario government to designate areas where projects could proceed under simplified rules, faster approvals, and a one-window access system.
This proposal raises serious red flags. Fast-tracking development by weakening planning rules, environmental reviews, and public consultation risks undermining local democracy, environmental protections, and Indigenous rights.
The term “critical to Ontario’s economy and security” is overly broad and vague, creating the potential for abuse or misuse in favour of politically driven projects without proper scrutiny. These Special Economic Zones could become loopholes for bypassing land-use planning processes, heritage protection, and environmental laws — many of which exist to prevent long-term harm.
Ontario needs responsible, transparent growth — not carve-outs that benefit select interests at the expense of the public, the environment, and future generations.
I urge the government to withdraw this proposal or, at minimum, commit to full public consultation, environmental assessments, and Indigenous engagement before any zones are created.
