I am a retired professional that has lived all my life in Ontario, first in Toronto, and now in the Parry Sound area of the province.
I am totally opposed to the concept of special economic zones. The environment is not less important or more important in one economic zone vs another. Either environmental legislation is sufficient to protect the province's natural capital, or it's not. Having the ability to short-change environmental legislation deemed necessary for other areas of the province, all for economic reasons in this area or that area, at the discretion of the government, just renders environmental protection a sham, and destroys any sense of integrity the government has left.
If existing legislation is bulky and inefficient, then fix it so that it meets needed protection objectives effectively and efficiently. If this is done properly, then there's no need for nonsense like Special Economic Zones.
