I do support removal of market entry barriers. Having watched the "uber" battles in various cities and how the protected taxi companies responded it is evident to me that controlling participation in the market does NOT promote innovation and very importantly it does not deliver what is needed by the users. The need for innovation is critical as what meets the user need as defined in community x in southwestern Ontario in 2016 will be different in 2040; and it will definitely be different that what is required in the communities in proximity to Sudbury.
Without question, anyone offering transit services needs to be safe and the Province needs to provide the regulatory regime for determining safety and the Province needs to enforce it. And, the potential customers need to know that safety has been assessed etc. i.e. there needs to be some sort of identification/marker.
The Province does not need to regulate quality of service; the user, the customer will do that very nicely.
Metrolinx is in process of building & operating significant public transportation corridors. It is important that people living in communities off these corridors are able to access these corridors without driving their own vehicle to a parking lot in proximity to the train station, for example.
