As an Ontarian deeply committed to the preservation of our province’s rich biodiversity, I am profoundly concerned about the implications of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. This legislation, which prioritizes fleeting industrial expansion over the enduring survival of at-risk species, marks a troubling shift in our environmental stewardship. The transition from the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to the new Species Conservation Act (SCA) significantly weakens crucial protections, all under the misleading banner of efficiency and economic growth.

While the government asserts that species will continue to be safeguarded, the SCA’s framework places conservation responsibilities into the hands of a registration and self-reporting system that favours developers, rather than relying on the impartial oversight of scientific expertise. The proposed "flexibility" (in the form of exceptions and limited oversight) creates inviting loopholes for developers to exploit.

Ontario is grappling with one of the most alarming rates of species decline in Canada. Our precious water sources, wetlands, forests, and wildlife populations are under relentless strain from unchecked development, aggregate extraction, and the looming impacts of climate change. Any further erosion of oversight will only accelerate the irreversible losses we are already confronting. Furthermore, the decision to relinquish provincial protections for numerous species in favour of poorly enforced federal laws is a misstep that undermines our conservation efforts when we need them most.

Biodiversity should not be viewed as an obstacle to economic prosperity! Flourishing ecosystems are cornerstones of food security, clean water, sustainable tourism, climate resilience, and public health. We cannot afford to barter away the natural heritage of future generations for the fleeting comforts of sprawl and short-term industrial profits.

Ontario requires robust, science-based protections for its endangered species. We cannot condone deregulation disguised as modernization!

We must:
1. Uphold rigorous independent permitting and monitoring requirements.
2. Ensure that every species at risk in Ontario receives complete protection, including those currently categorized as of special concern.
3. Guarantee transparency and foster public participation under the Environmental Bill of Rights. The voices of engaged citizens and passionate environmental advocates are indispensable in shaping our policies and ensuring the preservation of our biodiversity.
4. Prioritize habitat protection and restoration (esp. wetlands, old-growth forests, grasslands).

We must not sacrifice our irreplaceable biodiversity for the sake of short-term economic gains. The cost of extinction is devastating, permanent and irreversible. Let us firmly commit to considering the long-term survival of our at-risk species in every decision we make. The future of Ontario depends on it.
