Life on Earth has been evolving for billions of years. Every species is vital to the ecosystem it evolved in. When we remove protections from certain species, we're not only putting their individual lives at risk, we're putting the whole species and ecosystems at risk. The web of life is like a chainlink fence; if one species becomes imperiled or disappears, it puts other species at risk, possibly leading into cascading extinctions. As the alleged "most intelligent species" on the planet, we have a responsibility to use our empathy and ability to reason in order to protect every species on Earth. We should be treating the entire planet as if it's a singular organism, because in recognizing and protecting the utility of every individual and species, we uphold it's continued existence. Without the "lower" species, everything will fail, and humans will risk being wiped off of the Earth.
