Repeal Bill 5.

Removal of species from the endangered species list is environmentally dangerous. Those 106 species were added because knowledgeable conservationists believed it important to include them. Understand that it is important for Ontario to maintain its own list separate from neighbouring provinces provides further protection for these species.

As Sarah Christie of Earth Care points out, “each of these species represents a thread on a sweater and as we remove protections, we’re removing threads until suddenly we’re cold and naked“.

Bill 5 was yet another thin end of the wedge that conservatives, who refuse to understand conservation, implement to commodify the environment while current and future generations suffer from their actions. Further negative fallout is avoidable.

Additionally, Bill 5 amplifies environmental racism. Treaty 9 territory is being targeted. That would be the area covered by the James Bay Treaty. That is nearly the entirety of northern Ontario. Indigenous populations have suffered extensively when there were rules in place. Bill 5 removed those rules. The Omushkego Cree peoples who live and steward that area deserve better. What are the land acknowledgments for if no one respects the traditional stewards of the land, particularly ones who are in alignment with the conservationists?
