I strongly oppose the proposed legislative and regulatory amendments under the Species Conservation Act, 2025. These changes dismantle decades of progress in protecting Ontario’s wildlife and ecosystems.
This proposal replaces independent, science-based environmental protections with a self-regulated system that allows industries to police themselves. By removing dozens of species from Ontario’s protection list, eliminating public consultation, and granting sweeping discretionary powers to the Minister, the Act prioritizes short-term economic gain over the long-term health of our environment.
Ontario must not follow the path of deregulation seen elsewhere. We are Canadians who value nature, biodiversity, and accountability. Weakening endangered species protections is not modernization — it is regression and we are not America.
I urge the government to withdraw these proposed amendments and recommit to a transparent, science-driven conservation framework that truly safeguards Ontario’s natural heritage for generations to come.
