As a young person who has grown up in Ontario, I am appalled by the municipal government even considering passing legislation of this kind. Children in kindergarten are taught the importance and sanctity of our local environment and animals. Legislation that reduces the provinces responsibilities to protect the environment, ecosystems and animals is in direct opposition of federal initiatives, including targets set for climate action.
As a university graduate with an undergraduate degree in biology, masters in biology and a PhD in chemistry undergoing, my personal view is that the provincial government is trying to push through a bill that will provide them short term gains (in housing and construction) with long term devastating consequences. It appears short sighted, irresponsible and given the numerous previous attempts to pass similar legislation, deems the question, does this government and its representatives have ontario residents interests in mind? Or are current lobbyists from the construction industry more important?
Does the ontario government want similar situations aking to those in BC regarding environmental protests and community uproar? If so, I look forward collaborating with the activists from BC to learn what actions I can take to slow down or halt environmental damage sanctioned by the ontario government.
