The Ontario government says its plan to consolidate 36 conservation authorities into seven larger regional bodies is to make things more “efficient.”
I live along the Lake Erie shoreline and in one of the most flood-prone regions in the province, and the proposal raises serious questions and risks dismantling a system that works — one rooted in local knowledge, accountability and watershed-specific solutions.
Efficiency matters — but not at the expense of effectiveness, accountability, or local expertise. For regions like mine, keeping decisions close to home isn't just a preference, it's a necessity.
