The Town of Plympton-Wyoming strongly urges the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to reconsider the proposed boundary alignment under Bill 68. Specifically, the Town request that the southern Lake Huron shoreline region remain aligned with the Lake Huron watershed and be included within the proposed Huron–Superior regional boundary, rather than being grouped with the Lake Erie region.
The southern Lake Huron shoreline is ecologically and hydrologically distinct from Lake Erie. Its physical dynamics, shoreline processes, and water quality influences differ significantly, making the proposed inclusion in the Lake Erie region inconsistent with sound watershed management principles.
Aligning boundaries with natural watershed divides supports effective, locally informed environmental management. Maintaining Lake Huron’s integrity within its own region ensures cohesive shoreline management and better protection of unique ecosystem characteristics.
The proposed changes diminish local voices and representation in land use planning and resource management decisions. The changes will also redistribute local assets without adequate consultation or clear understanding of the affects on communities.
Additionally, realignment could impose higher financial burdens on local taxpayers, as they may be required to fund programs or infrastructure in distant jurisdictions with no direct benefit to their communities.
The Town of Plympton-Wyoming urges the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to undertake meaningful consultation with affected municipalities, Conservation Authorities, and Indigenous communities before finalizing any boundary or governance changes.
