This consolidating of conservation authorities isn’t a good idea.
First of all the different conservation authorities are set up around different watersheds not municipalities because rivers, streams and lakes don’t follow municipal boundaries.
Second of all different areas have different problems and obstacles that they have to deal with. What works in one area might not work in another. Expertise and experience with a particular watershed is imperative in managing each area.
Thirdly there are more frequent extreme weather challenges to deal with as climate change gets worse. Therefore it doesn’t seem very intelligent to reduce the number of conservation authorities dealing with these weather events. People’s lives and properties depend on quick and expert handling of these events.
Fewer conservation authorities means fewer people in the field and slower reactions. It will also mean less preventative actions that could potentially stop a disaster from happening.
Not what is needed in a time where we are seeing more and more natural disasters.
