I am very skeptical of the intent of this proposal and do not support the amalgamation of the current Conservation Authorities nor the setting up of another provincial level bureaucratic organization to dictate to local Conservation authorities. I do not know who is behind asking for this change and why it is being proposed.
I live in a rural village and volunteer with many organizations. We have partnered with our local Conservation Authority on a number of initiatives with great success. Their Management and staff are competent, responsive and very knowledgeable about our local areas and our environmental issues. Local municipal representatives sit on the local Conservation Authority Boards and set priorities and budgets. The Provincial government has greatly reduced its financial commitment to Conservation Authorities over the last 3 decades and shouldn't be interfering in a locally driven regional institutions that are working very well from what I can see. I don't see what problem you are trying to fix so am very suspicious of the intent behind this.
It smacks of an attempt to force more development in environmentally sensitive areas against the wishes of local residents. This is extremely misguided and will hurt future Ontarians by leaving them a legacy of compromised lands and waters.
From what I can see, the current Conservation Authorities work very well together. If the Province has ideas of improving tools and systems to benefit all, they should be working to within the current structures to move this ahead. No need to introduce another bureaucratic politically driven at the provincial level.
i urge you to rethink this proposal and sit down with the Conservation Authorities to see what improvements are really needed.
