I am a major stakeholder in this proposed change as I own property and reside directly beside land under the control of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority. I have read the proposed consolidation plan and am very skeptical that it would have any benefit to our region. The Ganaraska Forest is the best place in all of Ontario for off road trail use and the local conservation authority has done a fabulous job in preserving and improving the user experience within the forest. When you consolidate 7 regions to be governed under one body, those that are managed really well, will end up with less resources while regions managed to a lesser standard might come out ahead. It is clear to me that our region will lose resource in this averaging process.
The reasons sited for this consolidation seem to centre on cutting costs by eliminating duplication, and faster permitting for building. Neither of these issues are a concern for the Ganaraska region specifically because our region has developed more revenue tools than the other regions involved in this consolidation, and because the amount of conservation land that is open for public use in our area should not be developed further to build residential housing. If further land is needed to expand housing opportunities. I can only assume that this push is coming from the Ford government that DOES NOT have a good track record for respecting local and municipal interests, with record use of MZO which clearly benefits developers over residents.
