I am strongly opposed to this proposal. Ontario's conversation authorities protect our drinking source water and our watersheds, protect us from erosion and flooding (monitoring more than 900 dams, channels, dykes and saving Ontario $100 million, according to Conservation Ontario), and host education programs for 50 of our 72 Ontario school boards. Shrinking the number of authorities from 36 to just 7 will have a significant negative impact on both the natural environment and on our urban/suburban/rural communities (increasing the damage and frequency of natural disasters, decreasing access to education, and potentially harming our drinking water). I am very much against this harmful and unnecessary change. It's also worth noting that my local conversation authority is 95% funded by the local municipalities and citizens, not the province. I see no reason to attack our watersheds and to strip oversight and control from our local governing bodies. This proposal is a massive overstep on the part of the provincial government.
