I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed consolidation of Ontario’s conservation authorities into large regional bodies. As a resident of Sault Ste. Marie, I am concerned that this change would reduce local decision-making and weaken the strong community relationships that currently support conservation lands and recreational trails. The Hiawatha Highlands ski trail system is a well-used local asset that depends on local knowledge, volunteer involvement, and responsive management. Under a large regional authority covering vast northern areas, the unique needs of our community risk being overlooked. Recreational trail systems are not interchangeable, and decisions made far from Sault Ste. Marie may not reflect local conditions, usage patterns, or priorities. I am also concerned that recreation and trail maintenance could be deprioritized in favor of provincial goals such as housing and infrastructure. The current local conservation authority understands the importance of these trails for health, tourism, and quality of life. Consolidation may also make it harder for local users and volunteers to have their voices heard. While efficiency is important, it should not come at the cost of local accountability and stewardship. Northern communities already face challenges due to distance and limited resources, and further centralization could worsen these issues. For these reasons, I urge the province to reconsider this proposal or ensure strong, guaranteed local control is preserved within any future conservation authority structure.
