I am really concerned about the proposal to replace the OMB with local planning appeal boards. I was a resident in Neebing Municipality in Northwestern Ontario 15 years ago when the OMB and its independent review of a local planning decision saved a valuable wetland by preventing unwarranted development. I want environmental/development decisions made by a provincial body that takes a broad view of planning, standards and expectations regarding resources, heritage and quality of life for Ontario residents. I worry that a local review committee approach will mean that the municipal leaders in power in northern and rural places like Neebing (small population, few resources for developing a strong sustainability framework, quick turnover of council members or entrenchment of such members) could more easily force their ideology on the whole population with little regard for provincial standards. Balancing development with environmental concerns and quality of life for Ontario's residents are only becoming increasingly important given the nature of the challenges we are facing in the province. The OMB has been a voice for Ontario and the common good through its independent review.
