I am alarmed by the proposed changes to Conservation authorities.
The present arrangement of smaller authorities works well. They serve residents within their watersheds and their offices are readily accessible to those residents.
How will the new changes be financed? There will be costs to amalgamation. Costs that will be difficult to justify.
The connection between local councils who pay to support the present system will be lost. Will they be able to choose their representatives in the new larger authorities. I doubt it.
We are aware of climate change, 100 year storms are becoming more ferocious and more frequent than once every 100 years. Local knowledge is important, local people are more aware of changes to water flows within their area.
Wetlands must be preserved and restored. They become reservoirs to slow down flood waters and slowly release them. Will the new administration be more interested in destroying our remaining existing wetlands? CVC has improved conditions to the point where river otters are returning. I feel that these improvements will not continue under larger authorities who will likely be pressured by politics to support development rather than preservation.
In conclusion I do not think the proposed changes benefit the environment in Ontario or the people.
