I am writing to oppose the Ontario government's plan to consolidate Ontario Conservation Authorities. Each authority was created to manage its own watershed; this has been effective since 1946. Consolidations should be the decision of local governments served by the authority, to keep costs down and ensure localized service. Municipal dollars should be spent with municipal oversight, not provincial. Taking control of the area served away from local authorities threatens the current localized approach and expertise. Keeping the conservation authorities local and accountable to their communities will allow them to continue serving those communities with science-based work. Please do not consolidate the current conservation authorities.
