Let's keep moving in the right direction!
Driver education about the 1 metre rule and safe passing are important, especially since distracted driving is still a problem. I'd like to see some kind of education campaign to explain to drivers that in congested traffic, bikes are not holding them up, the general congestion and traffic signals are. My hope is that if drivers can generally realize that, it would remove the risky passes with little to no room, or speeding to make a pass only to have to brake hard afterward.
In most cities, there are still difficult friction points, especially when it comes to expressways and highways. Some of these friction points seem to have been accepted and part of the design, unfortunately. For example, the bike route in Windsor that crosses Howard Avenue has no less than 7 awkward friction points when trying to cross an off-ramp, and on-ramp along Howard, then cross Howard, cross the entrance to a plaza and then get onto West Grand. There is also the Dougall Death Trap, a well-documented pinch point that leaves no room for cyclists or pedestrians.
A walkable and cyclable lifestyle has tremendous benefits, to individuals and to the city. Another item that may seem unrelated to a cycling plan is the planning for things such as grocery stores. There are large grocery stores being built in large plazas without a single home or apartment building in-site. In the meantime, those stores that are in established core areas are forced to close. I'd like to see leaders encourage planning to supports active transportation instead of encouraging more driving.
Thank you
