I am 100% in full support of the submission of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. Waterloo Region is heavily dependent on ground water for its (drinking) water, accounting for approximately 75%.
This dependency suggests that a high bar of protection should be set to protect this important asset (to our drinking water supply). This includes protections to new, and existing licenses, where significant aquifer(s) are present.
Examples of setting a high bar include denying all new applications that are situated in a source water protection area, and significant groundwater recharge areas. For existing licenses, any current under-the-water-table license in these areas should be retroactively changed to above the table only, at a minimum.
Please refer to the attached report from the Region of Waterloo. I am in fully support of our Regional Government's ability to identify, and mitigate, any threat to our water assets.
