Dear Friends of the Environment, who have drafted the proposal,
What wonderful news! I applaud the key principles. Seems like a very complex undertaking, but the sooner it can be worked out the better.
I assume you have already thoroughly studied lessons learned from other Canadian and international jurisdictions.
The regulation should do everything it can to encourage producers to reduce and change their packaging, for example, make bags and other packaging from substances like corn starch (if it is safely biodegradable).
It is distressing to learn from media that so much of our effort to recycle plastics (in particular, but other materials too) is ineffective, and that the materials end up in a landfill somewhere and are not recycled like we were led to believe. I used to be proud that I was nicknamed by my family as "the Recycle Queen" until I learned that.
It is sad that the proposed targets for plastics are so low, even if vastly better than what happens now. Again, producers have got to figure out the packaging issue. Create incentive programs for that.
Sincerely,
A retired citizen of Ontario
