I would like to have greater clarity on what this Provincial Government intends to do with the lands freed by annuling the current legislation/planning guidelines. They use laudable language about wanting to provide more affordable housing but these greenspace corridors are not why housing is unaffordable. The problem has been that developers bid up older, affordable properties, making them unaffordable, only to tear them down and build even more unaffordable condos or homes. Eliminating greenspace, wetlands, farmlands, forests etc will impoverish us and make us less healthy, contribute to growing stress and do nothing to make more affordable housing available. Indeed, the municipalities mentioned have addressed the affordable housing needs in their 30 years land use plans and have indicated how they will ensure such housing is available. The Ford Government wishes to trash these plans only because the municipalities safeguarded their countryside lines to minimize additional urban sprawl, which is costly in terms of supporting infrastructure as well as destructive to our environmenal commons. I strongly opposed this Government's proposal to abolish this land use protections.
