I am actively involved in engaging with my local municipal governments -- Region of Waterloo and City of Waterloo -- especially re. implementing strategies that will reduce GHG emissions in transportation, buildings/housing, and waste management and in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion across this work.
Not only has Bill 23 rolled back the important and vital role of local governments to protect farmland, reduce urban sprawl and build accessible, affordable housing, now Bill 97 aims to strengthen the Province's hand by forcing landowners and municipalities to align with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing's view of what is needed for "the appropriate development of the land."
So far, I have not been inspired by the Province's vision and legislation (proposed and passed) to protect the Greenbelt (broken promise!), nor to bring wise and innovative approaches to addressing environmental and social needs. I do not support Bill 97 because it further erodes local level decision-making and forces alignment with ill-considered legislation.
