If passed, Bill 162 will:
1) Make it even harder to reduce carbon pollution
2) Increase both sprawl housing and highways
I do not want to see carbon pricing scapped. It makes sense for individuals and industry to pay for what we emit. It makes sense to incentivize lower carbon emissions and it makes sense to spend the money generated on projects that help reduce Canada's carbon pollution.
Bill 162 would not provide affordable housing. On the contrary, it would lead to the construction of unaffordable homes on unaffordable properties accessible only by those who can afford to own cars. Since the homes would be built on previously undeveloped land, there would be huge infrastructure costs passed along to taxpayers.
We are in the midst of a climate emergency. What all of us need is less sprawl and more forests, wetlands, farmland and other green spaces that, among other things, sequester carbon, produce oxygen and filter and cool the air.
The "Get it Done” Act is yet another attempt to benefit a few at the expense of the majority, and if passed, its negative impacts will be felt for generations to come.
Furthermore, it proves that our premier was not at all sorry for revoking his promise to protect the Greenbelt; he was only sorry that he got called out on it, and he's only too happy to revoke that promise again, only this time ensuring that the mayors take the blame for it (when they expand settlement boundaries into formerly green spaces).
